One of the largest marijuana companies in the country landed one of the most lucrative medical cannabis licenses in Kentucky, renewing concerns that out-of-state companies were able to game the state’s lottery process with a flood of expensive applications. Chicago-based Cresco Labs held a ribbon cutting ceremony last week in Winchester with Gov. Andy Beshear, showing off the large facility where they plan to grow medical marijuana.

Just four months after its 4-3 ruling to uphold a 2022 law that limited the power of Jefferson County Public Schools’ elected board, the Kentucky Supreme Court has now ordered a rehearing of the case. In another 4-3 decision issued Thursday, Kentucky’s high court granted a petition from the Jefferson County Board of Education.

Three recent University of Louisville graduates who received international visas through the school authorizing them to stay and work in their fields have had their legal status terminated by the Department of Homeland Security. A spokesman for the university confirmed Friday to Kentucky Public Radio that their visa database records had been terminated, a week after being asked if enrolled students or those in work placement programs have had visas pulled.

Kentucky Auditor Allison Ball announced Thursday her office is investigating the Office of Medical Cannabis and how it administered the lottery process for awarding business licenses last year. In a short press release, Ball indicated her office “has continued to receive complaints” about how the license application process was handled by the state.

The Kentucky Chamber of Commerce spent more to lobby the members of the Kentucky General Assembly than any other group in the 2025 legislative session that concluded at the end of March. More than 800 businesses and organizations reported spending roughly $8.7 million during the session, according to their filings with the Kentucky Legislative Ethics Commission. Close to 90% of that spending was directed to their registered lobbyists, who attempt to sway lawmakers.
