Junior point guard Jackson Bauman poured in 21 points and 10 rebounds while Knoch’s defense proved dominant inside in posting a 56-42 WPIAL Class 4A boys basketball consolation victory over Deer Lakes on Wednesday night. Knoch’s win on its home floor hands the Knights (19-7) the fifth and final WPIAL 4A state tourney qualifying berth. Knoch is headed to the PIAA Tournament for the first time in 21 years.

JEFFERSON TWP — Knoch played at home, but isn’t ready to go home. The Knights used a 10-0 run early in the second quarter to take command of their WPIAL Class 4A boys basketball consolation round playoff game against Elizabeth Forward and rolled to a 72-54 victory on their home floor Monday night. The win moves Knoch (18-7) within one win of a berth in the PIAA Tournament.

Owen Layhew was on the verge of making history — and still is. Bidding to become Knoch’s first-ever WPIAL wrestling champion during Saturday’s Class 2A individual championships at Chartiers Valley High School, the junior 145-pounder dropped a 7-0 decision to Elizabeth Forward sophomore Lucas Boyer in their title bout. “I knew he’d be a tough opponent, but I didn’t have enough confidence in my shots against him,” Layhew said. “I hesitated too much.

NEW CASTLE — Butler survived the first run. The second one did them in. The Golden Tornado fell behind 18-3 early in the second quarter of their WPIAL Class 6A quarterfinal boys basketball game at New Castle, victimized by a 15-0 Red Hurricane run. The visitors pulled within 36-32 with 5:12 left in the third quarter, only to watch New Castle go on an 11-0 run en route to a 64-43 victory. The win was the eighth straight for the second-seeded ’Canes (20-3).

JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley played five-and-a-half minutes before registering its first points in a WPIAL 6A boys basketball playoff opener Monday night. The drought proved a harbinger of things to come. The Raiders were limited to 32 points — their second lowest output of the season — ending their campaign with a 43-32 home loss to Woodland Hills. The Wolverines (11-11) led throughout while winning their fifth consecutive game and earning a shot at top-seed Upper St. Clair on the road Thursday.
