    For many of the people attending last week’s Vision Connection luncheon, tasks like doing laundry or making food become challenges that they can’t complete themselves because of their lack of vision. Thankfully, they don’t have to. The Pittsburgh chapter of the Foundation Fighting Blindness hosted the Wednesday, April 9, event to share resources with the low-vision community — a group that was well-represented at the Blind Association of Butler and Armstrong, where the event took place.

    This week, Slippery Rock University student-athlete Mike Crist is donning his pads and playing spring football as if nothing ever happened. Less than a week earlier, he, with the help of his mother and brother, put his life on the line to save a complete stranger by pulling him out of a burning vehicle on Interstate 79 near Portersville. The incident occurred in Muddy Creek Township, just south of the junction with Route 422.

    Local News Mars school district and Band Together Pittsburgh held an autism-friendly open mic night for students to express themselves musically. The open mic night was held at Mars Area Middle School Wednesday, April 2 at 7 p.m. Students were able to “focus on the joy of expression,” regardless of musical experience. The school district was able to provide amps, microphones, guitars, keyboards and percussion instruments for students who wanted to perform, so they could jam out.

    Karns City fifth-graders teleported their classmates from Chicora to Washington, D.C., with their presentations about the nation’s capital Monday, March 31. The presentations the students at Karns City Area Elementary School gave were part of their research projects on monuments, museums and landmarks in Washington, DC. The fifth-grade students spent all day Monday showing off their work to the other grades.

    Regulations recently introduced by the Federal Aviation Administration could affect the future of non-aviation events at Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport. In May 2023, the FAA issued the Final Policy and Procedures on the Temporary Closure of Airports for Nonaeronautical Purposes, which changed the procedure on how airports organize non-aviation events on their property.
