Constricted to inside the pass by two long rows of rocks, water flowed from the estuary into the Gulf. At the end of the jetty, the water swirled around the last rocks in a mushrooming effect. More than shifting currents disrupted the water surface. About 20 yards off the rocks, jumping baitfish desperately tried to escape the snaggled-toothed predators attacking from below.

When people think of Civil War battles, they normally think of the colossal clashes of blue and gray forces in places like Gettysburg, Pa., and the many battlefields of Virginia. However, some of the most significant battles west of the Mississippi River occurred in Louisiana. In the spring of 1864, General Nathaniel Banks led Union troops up the Red River to capture the capital of Louisiana: Shreveport. After the Union captured Baton Rouge in 1862, Opelousas became the state capital.

The blustery north wind pushed water out toward the Gulf of Mexico. Bundled against the biting cold, we watched several small crabs drift past our dock with the falling tide. "Something keeps nibbling at my bait and taking it off the hook," the young angler complained. "I can barely feel it. It must be really tiny.""It might be larger than you think. I have an idea," replied the experienced adult before scooping several small crabs with a dip net and hooking one on the line.

For a different type of waterfowling, head out to seaChesapeake Bay ranks as one of the most historical waterfowling destinations in the nation. My son, Daniel, and I met Joshua Bourne of Wingman Guide Service of Virginia Beach, Va., in Cape Charles on the Eastern Shore of Virginia one chilly morning. Well after shooting hours started, we anchored in the open water of Chesapeake Bay more than a mile from shore. We watched ocean-going ships dominating the endless horizon.
