EL CAJON — After going 26 games without a loss, the Granite Hills High School baseball team finally ran into a team it couldn’t beat. It took nine innings and several missed opportunities, but the Eagles ran out of magic and fell 5-4 to Villa Park in the first round of the Southern California Regional playoffs. Granite Hills, which made history by going unbeaten in San Diego through the regular season and playoffs en route to the section’s Open Division championship, finishes the season 24-1-2.

By John MaffeiPoint Loma High School’s dynamic pitching duo Marviel Underwood and Luis Lara allowed just one unearned run as the third-seeded Pointers upset No. 1 seed Rancho Bernardo 3-1 to win the CIF San Diego Section Division I baseball championship on May 31 before a full house at the University of San Diego’s Fowler Park. That came just four days after they combined to pitch 10 shutout innings May 27 in a 1-0 win against Cathedral Catholic.

Granite Hills is undefeated at 24-0-2, stacked with talent and the newly crowned CIF San Diego Section Open Division champion. Somehow, the Eagles are a No. 4 seed in the state playoffs, which begin Tuesday. Granite Hills will host Villa Park in the first round of the Division 1 Southern California Regionals. It’s more of the same for San Diego schools, who don’t seem to be getting much respect outside the county lines.
