You never know who might be swimming next to you in a treacherous river basin, and film star Julia Stiles is here to tell you: Take note. It might just be Nathaniel Rateliff (... and the Night Sweats, too). Stiles met Colorado’s biggest songwriting superstar back in August 2017 while she was swimming in the Columbia River near George, Washington (that’s an important comma). It was a chance encounter that years later would profoundly inform her debut effort as a film director.

You can’t rightly turn into a total wet blanket when it rains at a concert that’s all about celebrating the joys and vagaries of the great outdoors. I mean, you can – but that would just make you a buzzkill. (Don’t be a buzzkill.)You just gotta keep livin' man. L-I-V-I-N. Granted, the skies literally opened up over Civic Center Park on Sunday, forcing a full (ish) evacuation to allow a brief but Biblical gullywasher to pass.

A funny thing happened on the way to Michael McGrath’s “Death Party” on Friday night: Good news. A modicum of hope. McGrath, a beloved local rock photographer who has been chronicling live music in Denver since the late 1980s, was diagnosed in January with stage 4 bile-duct cancer. Since then, he and his family have gotten everything that generally comes with that kind of catastrophic news in a country with a broken health-care system: A tsunami of love, support … and unending medical bills.

Diana Castro performed under the name “Diana and the Big Time” – and to her friends, that’s exactly who she was. Big Time. “I shared many a stage with her over the years, and her talent was undeniable,” said veteran singer Erica Brown, who knew Castro for 40 years. “She was a force in the local music community. She could move a room to tears with her voice.”Castro was a longtime performer in local jazz and blues clubs like El Chapultepec, Dazzle, Herb’s Hideout, the Little Bear and Nissi’s.

Last year’s inaugural Outside Festival was like one giant musical bear hug, and the vibe promises to be just as chill this weekend with an eclectic lineup that all builds to Sunday night’s adored headliner, Lord Huron. But while the popular Michigan indie-rock band may have a royal moniker, it has taken on a royal pain of an itinerary this weekend: Red Rocks on Thursday, Salt Lake City on Saturday, then back to Denver to wrap up the Outside Festival in Civic Center Park at 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
