RALEIGH — Gov. Josh Stein’s new Council on Workforce and Apprenticeships held its first meeting this week, with a distinctive Surry County presence. Dr. Travis Reeves, superintendent of Surry County Schools is a member of the committee, and State Senator Eddie Settle, whose District 36 include Surry County, was named as co-chair of the committee, along with N.C. Department of Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley, and N.C. Community College System President Dr. Jeffrey Cox.

Sandra Hurley, long-time Stokes News publisher and life-long community journalist, has died. She was 65, and still serving as director, APG Integrated Services/Graphic Design Center in Mount Airy at the time of her death. While she had dealt with health issues in recent years, her death was a shock to her co-workers, family, and others in the community.

A Surry County man has been arrested and charged with the murder of his 14-year-old stepson. Gary Lynn White Jr., 41, of 310 Southridge Drive, Mount Airy, was arrested and charged in the child's death, according to the Surry County Sheriff's Office. He was initially arrested on Thursday and charged with felony child abuse, assault on a female, and domestic assault, according to Sheriff Steve C. Hiatt. The murder charge was served on White Friday, while he was still in custody.
