    RALEIGH — Gov. Josh Stein’s new Council on Workforce and Apprenticeships held its first meeting this week, with a distinctive Surry County presence. Dr. Travis Reeves, superintendent of Surry County Schools is a member of the committee, and State Senator Eddie Settle, whose District 36 include Surry County, was named as co-chair of the committee, along with N.C. Department of Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley, and N.C. Community College System President Dr. Jeffrey Cox.

    Sandra Hurley, long-time Stokes News publisher and life-long community journalist, has died. She was 65, and still serving as director, APG Integrated Services/Graphic Design Center in Mount Airy at the time of her death. While she had dealt with health issues in recent years, her death was a shock to her co-workers, family, and others in the community.
