In the months since the Hamas massacre on Oct. 7, 2023, the Middle East has come apart at the seams. Israel remains at war in the Gaza Strip, and fought against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon until a ceasefire agreement took effect on Nov. 27. However, the Houthis in Yemen, Shiite militias in Iraq and Syria, and the Iranian regime have also intervened in the escalating conflict with missiles and drones. Together these groups form the «Axis of Resistance» led by Tehran.

Even before the war began, the Gaza Strip was considered one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Today, the 2.2 million inhabitants are crowding into less and less space. The U.N. estimates that 80% of residents have had to leave their homes due to the fighting. After the war began, Israel called on all inhabitants in the north to flee to the south. The north has been bombed so heavily that only 40% of all buildings remain undamaged. This is shown by analysis of satellite images.

Moscow's statements on the number of Russians killed in the Ukraine war are unreliable, and U.S. military estimates are opaque. To provide some clarity, NZZ has developed its own estimation model with the help of a war expert. Henry Schlottman scrolls through an Excel file. He looks at thousands of neatly listed lines that break down the horror of war in bare numbers. On behalf of the NZZ, Schlottman has developed a model that quantifies the Russian losses in the war.
