Giving up was, perhaps, too strong a term. More accurate: letting my starter languish in the back of the fridge for weeks. Reading my sourdough-baking newsletters, sighing, and hitting delete. During the pandemic, I had become the kind of baker who bought a grain mill to grind local, heirloom wheats.

You don't go to a vegan cafe to search out love or stumble your way into a night of messy joy.
