A North Queensland woman says she is "traumatised" after being forced to wait four hours for an island medical evacuation when the region's rescue helicopter was unavailable. The Townsville region is serviced by a Queensland government-owned rescue helicopter, but it was out of action on the evening of November 4. That night Debbie Denison suffered a late-night haemorrhage on nearby Magnetic Island. "I went to the toilet, and when I looked in the bowl it was just full of blood," she said.

It's a call no child should have to make. But 12-year-old Michael Harwood was the only one who could ring 000 when his mum was hit by a ball of fire sparked by a faulty lawnmower. "I was playing with my dog Maggie when I heard my mum yell out," Michael said. "It was insane — I was absolutely freaking out mentally, but not in my body."Markeeta Harwood has been helping her husband clean a lawn mower in the backyard of their outback home at Hughenden, in Queensland's north-west, in May.

Bina's Kitchen and Cafe in Townsville has had a tumultuous year to say the least. From opening a second venue, break ins, catering, cooking classes and sporting events, owner Evelyn Billy has been absolutely run off her feet. Despite the peaks and lulls of owning a business in North Queensland, Evelyn's goal to unify her community through food has never wavered. She told the ABC's Jonathon Poulson about the year that was, and how a job still stands for the vandals who damaged her cafe.
