As March began, I remarked in The State’s monthly roundup of concert announcements that the summer calendar was off to a bit of a slow start in Columbia, with Colonial Life Arena, the largest such venue in South Carolina, having not yet announced a music event between May and August. We have a little more clarity on what the summer will look like at the arena as we leave March behind, with the venue having announced four new concerts, including two that will take place between May and June.

Cayce police logo Provided Cayce police are investigating a series of suspicious fires they suspect may be instances of arson. From March 1-14, the city reports an undisclosed number of fires occurred along the Cayce Riverwalk and adjacent commercial properties, according to a Friday release. City spokesperson Ashley Hunter said police are withholding the number of fires they’re investigating along with any other details about them to protect the integrity of the investigation.

A beloved locally owned and operated outpost of an iconic Southern grocery store chain is set to close. The Piggly Wiggly at 3818 Devine St., near Columbia’s Shandon neighborhood, is ending its run after serving the area for about half a century. Known by locals as the “Social Pig’, a reference to how often neighbors run into each other at the store, it celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2015.
