TEXAS — Hundreds of immigration advocates gathered at a Catholic Legal Immigration Inc. (CLINIC) conference in San Antonio for discussions on immigration law. Joanna Mexicana Furmanska was one of the many panelists at the conference. “Immigration law is one of the most complex areas of law, it involves statute regulation and rules,” Furmanska said. Furmanska, a senior attorney for CLINIC, says interpreting immigration laws can be very complex as federal and state laws evolve.

SAN ANTONIO — On Saturday night, for 77 minutes, many stood alongside Arnulfo Reyes at the Uvalde square with orange flags. The color orange creating awareness of gun violence and the 77 minutes it took law enforcement to confront and stop the shooter at Robb Elementary School on May 24, 2022. Nineteen students and two teachers died at Robb — Reyes survived the shooting. “I will keep doing it year after year as long as the lord permits me to do it,” Reyes said.

SAN ANTONIO — Marcela Hernández is always surrounded by Chicano history, whether it’s on a mural, at a rally, or in the classroom. “The fact we go to events like Thanksgiving in the barrio, Cesar Chavez march, we come to San Anto [Cultural Arts] to do mural tours,” Hernández said. Hernández is majoring in Mexican American studies, or MAS, at the University of Texas at San Antonio. “The more we educate ourselves, the more we educate our community, then the more power we hold,” Hernández said.

EDINBURG, Texas — Grupo Nueva Era from Economedes High School in Edinburg, Texas, can be heard playing songs of the homeland. The students are part of the state’s first high school Tejano music program. It was launched by the Tejano Music Legacy Foundation in the Rio Grande Valley. “A lot of the kids it comes from their abuelito, it comes from their tios, it comes from their dads,” Juan Garza said. Mariachi director Juan Garza oversees the music program, which already has conjunto and mariachi.

Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District (UCISD) Superintendent Ashley Chohlis is hoping for that healing. “We celebrate the milestone in our community’s journey toward healing and renewal,” Chohlis said.
