1 Introduction In September 2019, I met a forty-nine-year-old man named Fermin Castro (pseudonym) who was living in San Salvador, El Salvador. He had been born in El Salvador and was raised by his grandmother after his father left him and his mother migrated to the US. When he turned 19, his mother helped him migrate to the U.S. so they could be together. Five years later, he was able to adjust his immigration status and became a legal permanent resident after his mother petitioned him.
