DES MOINES, IA (WOI) -- The Des Moines Fire Department confirms three people are dead after a house fire. A department spokesperson told Local 5 it happened around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday near Three Lakes Parkway and Moonlight Drive. Police say several other people were able to evacuate. Officers say one person was taken to the hospital. Right now, it's not clear if the fire was suspicious. Local 5 will keep you updated as we get more information.

Des Moines police officers and fire personnel responded to multiple reports of a house fire near Three Lakes Parkway and Moonlight Drive around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, first responders found the house fully engulfed in flames, according to police. Officials said several people were able to evacuate the home, but three people died at the scene.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Catholics in Iowa and around the world are remembering Pope Francis, who passed away Monday morning at 88 years old. Father Reed Flood, the chaplain at Dowling Catholic High School and the assistant vocations director with the Diocese of Des Moines, met Francis on two occasions. Flood first got the chance to meet the pope when he was in seminary. A bishop invited Flood and his fellow seminarians to meet the pope during an ad limina visit.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Home builders in the Des Moines metro say they're seeing a surge of townhomes being built in central Iowa, but many of them aren't for sale. Numbers from the Home Builders Association of Greater Des Moines show that on average, less than 1,100 townhomes are being permitted every year since 2020. That compares to less than 700 receiving permits on average from 2010 to 2019.
