TARBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — The National Weather Service on Tuesday evening confirmed the first of what turned out to be three tornadoes in Edgecombe County during a 12-hour period starting Monday afternoon. Officials have already confirmed a tornado near Pinetops that hit early Tuesday morning, causing damage. They also confirmed an EF1 tornado with estimated peak winds of 100 to 110 miles per hour touched down in the area of southern Macclesfield at 3:27 a.m., staying on the ground for two minutes.

The tornado warning was issued at 5:10 p.m. for central Edgecombe County when radar indicated a severe thunderstorm over Tarboro, according to the National Weather Service in Raleigh. The tornado warning — in which radar “indicated rotation” — was extended later into parts of Halifax County until 6:15 p.m.After the warning, damage was apparent in parts of Tarboro, with CBS 17 crews spotting several tree limbs down and trees on homes and cars.
