SCOTTSDALE – While the outside temperature hit triple digits, competition for a new hockey season was heating up inside the doors of the Ice Den Scottsdale. The Arizona Coyotes held their 2023 Prospect Development Camp from July 3-7. Coyotes prospects and draft picks spent the week in training sessions and wrapped it up with a scrimmage. Forty-six players were named to the camp roster, headlined by former first round picks Dylan Guether, Logan Cooley, Conor Geekie and Maveric Lamoureux.

PHOENIX – Earlier this year, the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner released a grim statistic: 732 people died while homeless in 2022, a 42% increase from 2021. Valley health care providers who serve the homeless population agree that summer months are especially dangerous for those without shelter. But they add that chronic medical conditions and drug use contribute to the alarming increase in deaths among those experiencing homelessness.

PHOENIX – Nike and Jordan shoes squeaked against the court as Phoenix Suns players echoed “switch” and “box out” inside the Verizon 5G Performance Center in the summer league team’s final practice before heading to Las Vegas. The energy was high with players eager to show their worth in preparation to campaign for a spot on a star-studded roster that will feature Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal next season.

PHOENIX – An NBA dream born in Brussels, Belgium was chased by a 16-year-old kid who moved to Florida and now will be achieved while sharing the court with Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal and Devin Booker. For 23-year-old Toumani Camara, the Phoenix Suns’ lone pick in last Thursday’s draft, it has all come to fruition. “Going down the steps, shaking (Adam Silver’s) hand and (putting) the hat on (was) something that I have been dreaming about since the age of seven,” Camara said.

PHOENIX – The University of Arizona and Arizona State made the NCAA men’s basketball tournament last season, however, both teams suffered the same losing fate in the first round. That’s not all the programs lost. The two schools each had multiple starters leave for various reasons, igniting the offseason search to retool for the coaches.

HEBER – At this camp nestled among pine trees in northeast Arizona, kids ride horses, pet goats and hold chickens. They play outside with pollen and dust swirling around them – all triggers for their chronic disease. Parents have been sending their asthmatic children to Camp Not-A-Wheeze for 35 years, safe in the knowledge that their kids will be able to experience sleepaway camp while keeping their asthma under control.

GLENDALE – The State Farm Stadium speakers clashed with shouting from basketball coaches, players and squeaky whistles and sneakers on the venue’s freshly built floors. Home of the Arizona Cardinals, the stadium’s natural grass was removed and converted into 12 full-length basketball courts with games simultaneously being played on each court throughout the day. On Saturday, the Section 7 Tournament closed out the girls bracket featuring 136 teams.

PHOENIX – The Phoenix Mercury were on the rise after a come-from-behind win in Indiana – their second victory in seven games – before the season took a turn. Brittney Griner suffered a hip injury that sidelined her for the second half of Tuesday’s game against the Seattle Storm, adding to the list of difficulties the Mercury will have to overcome to remain competitive. Phoenix was outscored by 21 points during Griner’s nine minutes on the floor, and she managed to score only two points.

PEORIA – Drones whipped through the air Saturday at Peoria Sports Complex, where the Arizona Desert Hawks and the Phoenix Falcons competed in Major League Drone Racing’s (MLDR) first live preseason event. MLDR is a professional American Drone Racing League and new competitive sport where pro pilots go head-to-head racing drones at high speeds through different obstacles while accumulating points throughout 10 heats. “It (MLDR) is built just like the NFL,” MLDR founder and CEO Richard Tulloch said.

PAYSON – As the sun set over the city, the Payson Event Center lights illuminated the opening ceremony of the recent 36th Gary Hardt Memorial Rodeo. Hardt was a professional bull rider and skilled roper and was recognized across the Southwest for his skills. His career began in 1962 in his hometown of Payson, and he competed for many years before his death in 1987. Rodeo is nothing new to this community.
