The euphoria has dissipated. The Kitchener Rangers had the weekend to revel in their five-game series win over the Flint Firebirds in the first round of the Ontario Hockey League playoffs. On Monday, the team was back on the ice at the Aud for practice. Now, the focus is on the best-of-seven western conference semifinal against the Windsor Spitfires, which begins Thursday at the WFCU Centre. “It’s huge when you can have a little bit of rest between series,” Rangers coach Jussi Ahokas said Monday.

The reaction from the crowd was deafening. It wasn’t a goal that had Rangers Nation erupting midway through the match at the Aud on Friday night, but a heroic effort that saw the home side kill off two massive penalties. In short, it was the difference in Kitchener’s 2-1 victory, which capped a 4-1 series win in the best-of-seven Ontario Hockey League western conference quarterfinal against the Flint Firebirds. The Michigan crew came to town in must-win mode.

It was a bad hit, at least in the eyes of the Kitchener Rangers. Flint’s Josh Colosimo ran over Kitchener defenceman Cameron Reid late in the third period of Game 3 of their Ontario Hockey League western conference quarterfinal Tuesday at the Dort Financial Center. It got the vocal crowd going and Colosimo, who received a two-minute minor penalty for charging, was fired up as he made his way to the sin bin. Reid seemed OK, at the time.

Maybe the clocks get switched at a different time of the year in Michigan. Because the Kitchener Rangers experienced some Day-light saving time Tuesday night in Flint. That’d be Firebirds goalie Nathan Day who was unbeatable at the Dort Financial Center. The Edmonton Oilers draft pick made 38 saves to lead Flint to a 2-0 victory against the Rangers to help his team get back in its Ontario Hockey League western conference quarterfinal. With the win, Flint now trails the best-of-seven series 2-1.

Kitchener Rangers defenceman Carson Campbell won’t face further punishment from the Ontario Hockey League for clutching his crotch after scoring his first playoff goal. The 18-year-old grabbed his groin while celebrating the milestone marker against the Flint Firebirds in the second period of Sunday’s 6-1 win at the Aud. Campbell received a taunting penalty and was ejected from the game. He missed about the final 25 minutes of the contest.
