Richardson is the track superintendent. He’s watched over every aspect here for the last 13 years. “The crew, we also take care of all the barn area and everything on the backside here. LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - The Louisville community lost a Kentucky Derby icon last summer. This will be the first time in more than 50 years that Derby Pies will be made without Alan Rupp’s leadership. The Kern’s Kitchen president passed away last summer. Now his kids are running the business and honoring their father’s memory. When you step into the Kern’s Kitchen bakery, things haven’t changed much. The recipe is still the same one that the Kern’s created more than 70 years ago.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - It takes a lot of work to get a Derby horse ready for the track. From jockeys to trainers, everyone depends on farriers. Those are the professionals who trim hooves and shoe the horses. A lot of experience makes its way to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby, including one farrier who's worked with eight Derby-winning horses. "I remember American Pharaoh winning the Triple Crown and he was here and everyone wants to see him. He was such a sweet horse to be around.
