Dear Millers – what a beautiful weekend we're having. I promise to keep this email brief so that I don't detain you from enjoying the sun. It's coming up to five years since I started The Mill (our birthday is on June 5th, please direct cakes and gifts to our newsroom), and from the beginning, I've sent you occasional editor's notes on a Sunday afternoon to mark big moments.

Mill Media is looking for freelance editors who have experience working on long and complex stories, including narrative long reads, investigative stories and observational features. They will be working with our team of staff writers and editors to commission and edit stories from start to finish, so they need to be great at guiding writers and sharpening up ideas as well as improving drafts.

If you know anything that could help us, please get in touch.

Dear Millers – 2024 is in its dog hours and the Met Office map is covered in yellow and amber (“Strong westerly winds...some travel disrupted”), so I have a captive audience for an end of year editor’s note. This is supposed to be a day when we reflect on the year just been, and I’m thinking about a weekend in the Spring when I needed help and I knew where to find it.
