ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (KWQC) - A ceremony was held to recognize the 108th United States Colored Troops regiment in celebration of Juneteenth on Thursday. During the final year of the Civil War, more than 2,000 formerly enslaved men and freedmen joined regiments that made up the United States Colored Troops (USCT) and were instrumental in the outcome of the Civil War, an organizer said.

LOUISA COUNTY, Iowa (KWQC/Gray News) – After authorities removed 88 children from a church camp in Iowa and placed them in protective custody, a church employee said the situation all started with a call to police from a 15-year-old. On Monday, the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office said 88 children are now in protective custody after deputies conducted a child safety operation on Thursday and Friday.

LOUISA Co., Iowa (KWQC) - Dozens of children are in protective custody after Louisa County deputies conducted a child safety operation. Deputies said the operation took place on June 12 and June 13 based on reports of child abuse and endangerment. The 88 children, who were attendees of the Kingdom Ministry of Rehab and Recreation and the Shekinah Glory Camp, were taken into protective custody, according to deputies.

GALESBURG, Ill. (KWQC) - The Galesburg School District is moving forward with plans to modernize it’s baseball and softball field. Superintendent John Asplund says the renovations include new artificial turf fields along with improvements to the bleachers, concession stands, and restrooms. The superintendent hopes the upgrades could open the doors for big events in the future. “We also want to expand what we’re doing out here with more tournaments in the summer,” he said.

GALESBURG, Ill. (KWQC) - The City of Galesburg celebrated the opening of their new solar farm with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. A company called Nexamp and Trajectory Energy Partners opened the Blue Grama Solar Farm. Officials said the farm will generate more than 4.7 MW of power for the local grid. The site features more than 8,000 solar panels and the company said it makes a significant addition to the state’s solar generating capacity.

The City of Silvis welcomed a pair of businesses into the downtown area. Powell’s Barber Shop and Sunny Sensations celebrated their openings with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The owners of the two businesses in the same building said they’re excited for their new beginnings in their hometown.

BETTENDORF, Iowa (KWQC) - The City of Bettendorf marked its 122nd birthday and to celebrate, the city is hosting a Be Downtown event, a day of free, family-friendly fun activities. Be Downtown started on Saturday at noon with live music from several local bands, pro wrestling, kids activities, food trucks, and a bags tournament, event organizers said.

The Touch A Truck event gives families the opportunity to explore different types of vehicles, several including firetrucks, police cars, construction vehicles, tractors, and emergency vehicles. Those who attended were able to learn how the different vehicles operate, along with their uses, talk to the professionals who operate them, and take some photos.
