Homes for people struggling with mental illness or recovering from substance use have long flown under Santa Clara County’s radar with substandard conditions and little to no accountability. San Jose wants to transform a dilapidated park — home to one of the largest camps of unhoused residents in the city — into a family-friendly area for sports activities. San Jose has spent the last few years planning to revitalize Columbus Park, located at Asbury and Irene streets. The new 9.4-acre park design will feature synthetic soccer fields, courts for horseshoe, futsal, basketball and pickleball, picnic areas and a play area for children. It’s estimated to cost $24 million.
