I can’t remember the exact moment it happened, but ever since our mothers dressed us up in white, poufy chiffon dresses with inflatable petticoats underneath to recite a poem together at our Christmas kindergarten pageant, we became best friends. I was the lucky one. Brenda’s father owned the neighborhood deli around the corner in the tiny New Jersey town where we grew up.

Nine of the 10 achieved advanced degrees while the other became an athlete and physical education teacher. My first home was a small 1920s cottage in the canyons of Los Angeles. It was in the same hills as Dodger Stadium, where we could sometimes hear the roar of the crowd at night and where hawks and coyotes roamed during the day. It had a small kitchen and dining room, which I filled with an antique sideboard and table, and a living room you stepped down into with a large, oval Spanish-style window that gave a picturesque view of the lush canyon.

My fascination with cemeteries began when I was a child, when my father would take me to our local one in New Jersey to pay our respects to lost relatives. While he stood in thought over the grave of his father or brother, I’d wander. In the back end of this cemetery were the older graves. Every third or fourth headstone I walked by had a picture on it — a photo of the dead person lying in their coffin.
