HARTFORD — A bill targeting Connecticut’s decades-old teacher certification system aims to lessen the requirements for people interested in becoming educators. But several advocates and educators say the legislation doesn’t go far enough in breaking away from an “archaic” system. Last year, the state Legislature passed a law creating the CT Educator Certification Council, which would offer recommendations for enhancing the quantity and diversity of teachers within the state.

STAMFORD – First there were red-outs, then walk-ins, now high school teachers have issued no-confidences. According to teachers, votes were taken at all three of the city’s public high schools attesting that a majority of teachers do not trust the leadership of Superintendent Tamu Lucero. The protests stem from Lucero proposals to change class schedules at the high schools, moves teachers say were made without their input.

After her second back surgery – and 38 years of working 12 hour hospital shifts as a nurse – Denise Gulish assumed she would need to retire early from her beloved but physically demanding job. “It was difficult to put in multiple days after my back surgery,” Gulish said. After tearing a tendon in her hip, ICU nurse Ruekia Serrano, thought she too was in for a career change. “I love bedside and patient care,” Serrano said, who worked for nine years in the Yale New Haven Health Intensive Care Unit.

In 2018, after teaching for 12 years at Ridge Road Elementary School in North Haven and sending her children there, Julie Mountcastle decided she had had enough. “I was through with education. I said I wasn’t doing it anymore because of the testing. That was my whole reason,” she said. In 2015, just three years earlier, the state was implementing the new Smarter Balanced testing required by state law.
