Placing books in the hands of children is one of the most powerful ways to start their journey toward literacy excellence, and the Rotary Club of Carrollton is playing a part in this success. Two grants awarded to the club by the Rotary Foundation, plus a club investment in the projects, produced $12,000 to purchase books for every third grader in Carroll County and another $4,000 that provides 100 sponsorships for younger children in a renowned early childhood literacy program.

Die Stadt ist damit die erste in den USA, die einem Tier definierte und einklagbare Rechte einräumt, so die Beamten.

Fire crews from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the U.S. Forestry Service are continuing to battle three blazes in the hills surrounding Los Angeles which have burned over 500 acres since July 25. The Owen Fire in Topanga Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains is currently 25 acres and 30 percent contained, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department at 9:26 p.m. on Wednesday.

Fullerton became the fourth city in Orange County last week to initiate a social worker response program to address homelessness and non-life-threatening emergencies in the city instead of police. City officials said the move will lessen the burden on officers and give the homeless quicker access to support services. Other calls targeted for the program include those involving mental health emergencies, domestic violence crises, or juvenile delinquency.

A former employee of a San Diego homeless center pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud July 20 for stealing over $70,000 in government checks meant for the homeless. Charisse Elaine Alexander, 55, worked at the San Diego Day Center for Homeless Adults—also known as the Neil Good Day Center—in April 2021, where she stole checks with the assistance of her then-boyfriend until January 2023, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

San Clemente residents can expect wastewater sewage rates to rise by 30 percent over the next five years after the San Clemente City Council voted 4–1 July 18 in favor of the rate hikes, with Mayor Pro Tem Steve Knoblock abstaining. Such rates will increase by 9.5 percent as soon as October. Going forward, rates will rise by 6 percent in 2024, 5 percent in both 2025 and 2026, and 4.5 percent in 2027. The council made its decision after the city performed a rate study.
