    Residents learned in the past week they will be looking at increases in rates for both North and South ferry companies with the North Ferry rate proposal known and the South Ferry proposal expected to be revealed shortly. North Ferry General Manager Bridg Hunt and Manager John Michalak presided over an information session on April 9 to discuss the planned increase with Island residents whose tickets are subsidized by those who pay full fares.

    Deborah Price Lechmanski never thought about writing a book. It  started as notes to herself, jotted down beginning almost a decade ago about memories of growing up on Shelter Island — many sweet but some painful. “This is my life,” Ms. Lechmanski said, noting that while she had no notes written during her childhood, her book, “Growing Up On Shelter Island: Happy Times and Sad Times,” came from her memory of people and events.

    A rush of students descended on the Shelter Island School’s Board of Education conference room on Friday, April 4, in search of summer and/or after school jobs. Island businesses have long brought students on to their staffs during the summer season when the population typically swells to more than 10,000, and having more employees becomes critical. This summer could be one of the most difficult since the government has tight restrictions on who might be able to come to the United States.

    The fourth time was the charm for the Town Board to finally unanimously approve a new dock code at the April 7 meeting. After all the vitriol at three previous public hearings, the fourth public hearing finally ended in moments of praise, thanks and smiles throughout the room. The meeting started with Town Clerk Amber Wilson reading a number of letters into the record praising the latest draft and encouraging a unanimous vote on the document. The vote was 4-0 with Councilman Albert Dickson absent.

    Several hundred residents of Greenport, Shelter Island and Southold Town protested in a rally Saturday, April 5, in Greenport to demonstrate their opposition to the policies being carried out by President Donald Trump. Steady rain started just as the rally at Mitchell Park got underway, but protesters remained until the demonstration ended — about 90 minutes later.
