Words matter. Language can help people feel understood and heard, but it also has the power to alienate. Language is also ever-evolving, and ‘official’ terminology – or that favoured by stakeholders – may not actually be preferred by participants themselves. Keeping on top of best practice for inclusive research can be a challenge, and language is a key part of that.
