On Wednesday, Dauphin County Commissioner George Hartwick addressed the question that’s been top of mind for the past month: Where has he been? An alcohol rehabilitation program. Wednesday’s commissioner meeting marked Hartwick’s first public appearance in the five weeks since he crashed his county-owned SUV in a parking garage, appeared to slur his speech at a 10 a.m. meeting and was charged with DUI.

Dauphin County Commissioner George Hartwick is back. PennLive reporters spoke with Hartwick Monday at the county administration building in downtown Harrisburg, the first public sighting of him since he crashed his county-owned SUV in the building’s parking garage on April 2 and was charged with DUI. Hartwick disappeared for over a month following the crash, offering no public statement as to his whereabouts and leaving constituents questioning if and when he would return to work.

The 911 dispatcher who took the call from the suspected firebomber of the Governor’s Residence within an hour of the attack should have escalated the call, but didn’t, Dauphin County officials admitted. Chief Clerk Eric Hagarty said the county learned the 911 dispatcher “did not appropriately escalate the call in accordance with County policy,” though county officials declined to provide the policy in question.
