MORGANTOWN — With six solid innings Sunday, WVU pitcher Jack Kartsonas will finally reach the NCAA’s and Big 12’s requirement for innings pitched to be included among the best in earned run average. Depending on how that start goes against Kansas State, Kartsonas could become the Big 12’s leader in ERA and possibly settle in as high as third in the country. Six years ago, that statement would have seemed like wishful thinking, maybe even a bit absurd. Even to Kartsonas.

May 8—MORGANTOWN — It can be debated whether Pitt landed a swift jab or a complete roundhouse right against the 13th-ranked WVU baseball team. Either way, Mountaineers' head coach Steve Sabins said it may have been a needed blow. Advertisement"The reality is, during the course of a long season, sometimes you need to be punched in the face a little bit to get refocused, regroup and really concentrate on how to get better, " Sabins said after Pitt's 10-9 walk-off victory on Tuesday night.

MORGANTOWN — Pitt ended an eight-game losing streak against rival West Virginia on Tuesday night, at Charles L. Cost Field in Pittsburgh, as the 13th-ranked Mountaineers blew a 9-5 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning for its third consecutive one-run loss against a nonconference opponent. The Panthers (25-21), who had not defeated the Mountaineers since March 30, 2022, erased the deficit mainly off a three-run home run by Jayden Melendez. That cut into WVU’s lead, 9-8.

MORGANTOWN — It could have been a moment that called for a quick quip, the kind that would make for a good sound bite on the local news and where everyone in the media would chuckle and move on. To be sure, that’s how former WVU baseball coach Randy Mazey would have handled being ejected from a game, likely telling us people holding a notepad or camera he was just having a heated discussion with the ump on where to have dinner that evening. Steve Sabins is not Mazey.

#WVU baseball has experienced a certain level of adversity lately. Head coach Steve Sabins called it "painful," but it is pain that's only come because the program continues to exceed expectations: https://t.co/O1gvCA2tA6

Another late-inning meltdown costs #WVU a shot at Big 12 baseball title. The chase continues Thursday, when 13th-ranked Mountaineers open 3-game series with Kansas needing 1 win to secure conference championship: https://t.co/HPi39ZxfY5

Two games. Two 9th innings. #WVU led Pitt and K-State by a combined nine runs and then gave up a combined 11 runs to lose both times. Never seen anything like it: https://t.co/8rI3ykGSST
