Six hikers became lost after leaving a trail on Greenhorn Mountain on May 30. A PCSO search and rescue team launched an operation that lasted 25 hours. in which one search and rescue team member was injuredAll of the hikers were recovered with the assistance of other agencies, including the Custer County Sheriff's Office and Colorado Air National Guard. The injured team member was treated for their injuries and released from the hospital.

Two of Pueblo's three new fire stations are expected to open in the fall of 2024. The new stations are being built to improve response times and firefighter safety. Funding for the $34.4 million project was secured in 2023 through certificates of participation. A grand opening for Fire Station No. 11 is scheduled for Aug. 1.

Three people were rescued from the Arkansas River at Pueblo Waterworks Park on May 31, according to the Pueblo Fire Department. The fire department responded to the park at about 1:37 p.m. to rescue three people who'd gone under the water for an extended period of time, according to Tim Trujillo, spokesperson for the fire department.

The Colorado Department of Transportation is urging parents to discuss safe driving habits with teenage drivers in their family in anticipation of the deadliest time of year for motorists. In a May 28 news release, CDOT officials said Colorado State Patrol reported more at-fault crashes involving young drivers in May 2024 than in any other month. Of the 3,577 at-fault crashes by drivers 16 to 21 years old investigated by CSP in 2024, 355 happened in May.
