It started Wednesday afternoon around 1 p.m. when, according to the Kern County Fire Department, a car careened over the side of the canyon, killing the driver and catching fire. The fire on Highway 178 near Borel Road began to rapidly spread, and as a result, Highway 178 was closed.

    Pura Vida is the newest coffee shop to hit the streets of downtown Bakersfield, and one can argue that it’s making quite a name for itself. The name directly translates to “pure life”, but also serves as a Costa Rican greeting. This name would make sense given how the shop gives coffee a Latin twist. For instance, the strawberry horchata matcha latte takes the classic Mexican drink and fuses it with coffee. The same can be said with the horchata café de olla cappuccino.

    It’s that time of year again for Bakersfield College’s Student Government Association election. This year’s election was preceded by a debate held in the Levan Center, where students had a chance to meet several candidates, including BCSGA President and Kern Community College District Trustee candidate Cindy Ceja Miranda, BCSGA Vice President candidates Raya Arafah and Randy Arevalo, and Director of Student Organizations candidates Johana Solis and Abigail Tamayo.
