    HOUSTON (KIAH)–April is Animal Cruelty Prevention Awareness Month. It’s a time when police and animal welfare supporters work together to put a stop to animal abuse. Here in the outskirts of Houston, they call one side of town, the ‘Corridor of Cruelty.’ One dog rescuer, JaNell Mitchell, found a dog trapped under a couch. The dog now known as Jericho is what his rescuer and his now foster would call a miracle. When he was discovered, he was covered in flies, emaciated and trapped.

    HOUSTON (KIAH)–Thanks to a new grant awarded by the Texas Workforce Commission, Houston Community College received $280,000 for its apprenticeship training program. The program will help train future electricians, plumbers and more. The grant will help 550 students including electrical apprentice, Ralph Leon. He says he’s been in the program for two years.

    HOUSTON (KIAH)– On April 15, 2013, Rebekah Gregory’s life changed forever. She was severely injured in the Boston Marathon Bombing during a visit with a friend. It was her first time in the city and it was something she never imagined would happen to both her and her young son. She lost her left leg, went through rehab to learn to walk all over again at Memorial Hermann Katy and has had 76 surgeries.

    HOUSTON (KIAH) — West Briar Middle School Parents are furious with Houston Independent School District from what they say is all attributed back to a toxic culture from the state takeover of the district. Anna Heinzelmann, a West Briar parent, said that this protest is happening due to the treatment of teachers and administration. “(This) has led to many of the resigning in the past year and we anticipate more.” Another parent, Valerie Shaikh said, “We’re having a toxic culture in HISD.

    HOUSTON (KIAH)–Today, The Montrose Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone Board, also known as TIRZ 27 will start construction on Montrose Boulevard for the Montrose Boulevard Improvement Project. The board says this is an effort to help create more pedestrian and traffic safety on the road. However, many residents including members of Friends of the Boulevard, say that the project is only making Montrose an even bigger safety hazard for bikers, walkers and drivers.

The woman you see in the photo below survived the Boston Marathon Bombing back in April 2013. She was severely injured and as a result lost her left leg and has had 76 total surgeries.
