JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — In 2024, Make-A-Wish East Tennessee granted 116 wishes in the 36-county region of East Tennessee. Nationally, Make-A-Wish put smiles on more than 13,000 ill children’s faces. In East Tennessee, 7-year-old Hazel Erman was granted her wish to be able to navigate her family’s farm with a new golf cart. Hazel has a rare metabolic disorder and is non-verbal. Her mother said driving the golf cart and making friends are the two things she loves most.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — On Wednesday, News Channel 11 will host a telethon to help Make-A-Wish East Tennessee grant wishes to critically ill children in the region. Starting at 4 p.m., a phone bank will be open during News Channel 11’s evening newscasts for people to call and donate. In 2024, the organization granted 116 wishes in the 36-county region of East Tennessee. Nationally, Make-A-Wish put smiles on more than 13,000 ill children’s faces.

JOHNSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Tennessee Hills Distillery announced the location of its fourth location. The new site will be in Johnson County at the site of the former Watauga Lake Winery property creating what they call the “Tennessee Hills Copperhead Road experience – combining craft wine making with the soul of Appalachian distilling.”The winery will move its operations to an expanded Villa Nove Vineyards, owned by the Waterfront Group.

JOHNSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The owner of Sunset Gardens Assisted Living Facility in Mountain City was arrested Monday at her place of employment, the Central Office of Johnson County Schools, and charged with various drug offenses, identity theft, child endangerment and more. According to a news release from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), Wendy Henley, was arrested after an investigation by the TBI’s Medicaid Fraud Control Division and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

BUCHANAN COUNTY, Va. (WJHL) — Southwest Virginia was subjected to severe flooding over the weekend along with other parts of Appalachia. Floodwaters led to evacuations and power loss throughout the region, and many school districts were closed Monday as recovery efforts began. In Buchanan County, schools will be out until further notice. Residents of Boyd’s Riverside Trailer Park told News Channel 11 that despite the close proximity to water, flooding had never been a concern before.

UNICOI COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Ballad Health’s Unicoi County Hospital received $9.8 million in funds approved by the State of Tennessee and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for rebuilding. The hospital, located along the banks of the Nolichucky River, was destroyed when Hurricane Helene swept through the region in September. More than 50 people were rescued from the hospital’s roof due to rising floodwaters brought in by Helene on Sept. 27.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – While Cyra Bullock’s grandmother Wilma West was hospitalized at the Johnson City Medical Center (JCMC), a nurse allegedly used her debit card to make fraudulent charges. Now, Bullock is speaking out about how this situation was allowed to happen. West was fighting fibrosis, blood clots, COVID-19 and pneumonia all at the same time while hospitalized at JCMC. That is when she received a call from Northeast Tennessee Credit Union about strange charges on her debit card.

(WJHL) — More than 200 people gathered Saturday morning in Johnson City for an annual Interfaith Prayer Breakfast in honor of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The gathering took place at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church on Princeton Road. It featured keynote speaker, Vice President for Equity and Inclusion Keith V. Johnson, PhD, who discussed the values that King Jr. fought for in the 1960s, and similar issues observed in this age.
