Northern lights could be visible in parts of Ontario and across Canada this week. A strong geomagnetic storm could bring the Aurora Borealis to areas across Canada and some parts of the U.S. Wednesday and Thursday, according the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center. The lights were also forecast for Tuesday night but overcast conditions likely hampered views in many areas.

A shocking animal cruelty investigation in Mississauga exposes flaws in Ontario’s animal protection laws, according to an animal rights organization. This week Peel Regional Police announced the details of an animal cruelty investigation involving puppies. Police said dogs between eight and 10 weeks old were found discarded either deceased or badly mutilated and left for dead in the Dundas Street West/Mavis Road area between this past December and March.

Person sought in murder investigation could be in southern Ontario

A person wanted in connection with a murder investigation in Sudbury could be in southern Ontario. A 21-year-old man was found dead in a Black 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 on Lansdowne Street in Sudbury on April 6, the Greater Sudbury Police said in press release. Police found the man after a call for a suspicious vehicle in a garage. The coroner’s office later confirmed the man died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds. Police are not releasing his name out of respect for the family’s wishes.

Mississauga residents have a new choice for Mexican food. Molkagtez Mexican Cuisine just opened a new location at 89 Lakeshore Rd E. in Port Credit. The space was previously home to the vegan eatery, Community Restaurant, which permanently closed earlier this year. The first Molkagtez location in Parkdale, Toronto is popular with many good reviews on Google. It is known for its festive atmosphere and molcajetes (stone) dishes.

Teens from Mississauga, Brampton and Bolton face charges in a Toronto robbery investigation. Two incidents were reported in Toronto over the weekend. In the first incident, a group of people drove to a store wearing masks in the Lawrence Avenue East and Markham Road area on Saturday, April 12, Toronto Police said. Several people entered the store and confronted the employees while making demands for electronics, police said. Police said the people took cell phones and cash.
New campaign combats racism in Mississauga

As hate-motivated incidents and hate crimes rise in Mississauga and Peel Region, the city is launching a new campaign to combat racism. The city launched the “One Mississauga” campaign on Tuesday. In May 2024, Peel Regional Police reported an increase in hate crimes related to race, religion and sexual orientation in 2023. According to the 2021 census, 62 per cent of Mississauga residents identified as racialized and 53 per cent as immigrants.

Police are investigating three truck fires reported overnight in Brampton. Emergency crews responded to a fire in the Buffridge Trail and Cresthaven Road area of Brampton just before 1 a.m. on Tuesday, Peel Regional Police told INsauga.com. Two tow trucks were on fire, police said. Police said another tow truck fire was reported, about four kilometres away, in the Venetian Terrace and Brisdale Drive area on the same night.
CLOSURE: Major retail brand to close most stores in Canada

A Canadian retail brand will close most of its stores across the country. Sustainable fashion chain Frank and Oak plans to close most of its stores, according to news reports. The company filed for creditor protection under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act in December 2024 as it struggled with $71 million in debt. A Retail Insider story suggests 10 stores will shut while other news reports indicate nine stores will close by May 7 as Frank and Oak looks for a buyer.
Suspects caught on camera in home invasion in Caledon, Ontario

Five people are wanted in connection to a break-and-enter in Caledon. Police responded to a home invasion on The Gore Road, near Old Church Road, after 5 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, OPP said. One person was home at the time, police said. OPP said preliminary findings indicate that five male suspects entered the residence and displayed a firearm, believed to be an imitation. The suspects were captured on surveillance footage.
