    NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A former treasurer for a Norfolk nonprofit organization has been sentenced to nine months in jail after pleading guilty to embezzling $27,000 while overseeing the group’s finances. Christopher Bernhardt, 45, was sentenced in Norfolk Circuit Court on felony charges of embezzlement, issuing bad checks, and failure to appear in court.

    GLOUCESTER, Va. (WAVY) — Gloucester County Animal Control recently seized 87 animals in Hayes, Virginia due to unsafe living conditions. According to a release, the animals seized included dogs, cats, horses and other small animals. All of the animals were found in “unsanitary and inhumane conditions.” Due to the condition the animals were found in, the Gloucester County Animal Control was awarded full custody of all 87 animals.

    NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The Newport News Police Department is investigating an incident involving a substitute teacher allegedly grabbing a student by the throat at Richneck Elementary back in December. According to court documents, a substitute teacher had a verbal altercation with a student on Dec. 17. It escalated once the substitute teacher allegedly grabbed the student by the throat and pulled them into the hallway, where there were no security cameras.
