To keep track of the Bay Area’s ups and downs, we started Fogcutter, SFGATE’s weekly column of happenings and events. Every week, SFGATE reporters put down their notepads, close their laptops and hit the streets to explore Bay Area parks, bakeries and concert halls. Our hope is to offer you a brief snapshot of local public life — a break from hard news and a reminder of the region’s liveliness and variety.

The dream of being able to pay for Muni or BART using just your debit or credit card has become an even more distant reality. The fare payment system that will make this possible, known as Next Generation Clipper — or Clipper 2.0 — is designed to seamlessly connect the Bay Area’s 27 transit agencies. When running and fully functional, it will offer discounted transfers between these agencies, as well as immediate fare loading and the ability to tap to pay with your personal cards.

The company, which was founded in Palo Alto by Stanford graduate Roy Raymond, opened its first brick-and-mortar store in the Stanford Shopping Center in 1977.

May 27-Your backyard bird feeder could be changing the birds that use it. A former UC Berkeley grad student, Nicolas M. Alexandre, along with a team of other researchers, published a study last week in Global Change Biology about a fascinating hummingbird adaptation. According to their findings, Anna's hummingbirds on the West Coast of the U.S. have been able to expand their territory because of the proliferation of hummingbird feeders.
