PORTLAND, Oregon — At the state Capitol, lawmakers heard passionate testimony regarding dogs and cats — but mostly monkeys — on Tuesday. Members of the House Committee on Emergency Management, General Government and Veterans listened to public testimony Senate Bill 181 A. As it's written, the bill aims to prevent public money from funding painful research on dogs and cats. "I'm here, however, to talk about the monkey in the room," said Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel.

PORTLAND, Oregon — It's a $1.83 billion ask, but a lot of people living within Portland Public Schools boundaries are ready to support the PPS school bond renewal. "I voted for it because I feel like kids' education is one of the most important things there is," said PPS parent Susannah Daniel. If voters pass the school bond renewal, the tax rate would continue to be around $2.50 per $1,000 of assessed value. Special election ballots must be postmarked by Tues.

HILLSBORO, Ore. — For as long as they can remember, twin brothers John and Ethan Sommers have loved swimming. The 16-year-olds have been competing with the Hillsboro Heat club team since they were 6. "I fell in love with this sport, with the training every day," said John Sommers. While swimming is such a big part of their lives, the Sommers brothers know that many kids don't know how to swim and that for some families, swimming lessons aren't in the budget.

WILSONVILLE, Ore. — True Williams figures it took her about 16 hours to create a sculpture of a human heart made of clay and cigarette butts that she picked off the ground at a concert. She didn't mind the effort, so long as her art inspired people to not smoke, a habit she said led to the deaths of her grandparents. "It's kind of like a (public service announcement) to people," said Williams, 17.
