May 13, 2025 By KAREN VELIEDespite mutiple calls reporting the neglect of a young boy, San Luis Obispo County social workers appear to have failed to protect the 6-year-old child who allegedly died after being left in a car while his father went to work on Saturday. Briant Reyes Estrada, a 27-year-old Mexican national, worked and lived in Cambria in 2023 and 2024 with his son. The child’s mother reportedly lives in Mexico.
Goleta coach arrested for child sex crimes, deputies seeking witnesses

Last month, detectives launched an investigation into lewd images of children and identified the suspect as 42-year-old Shaun Donald Hertlein of Goleta. Detectives also learned that Hertlein worked with children through his affiliation with a church on Cathedral Oaks Road as well as assistant coaching for freshman boys football.

While the man worked from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the 6 or 7-year-old child was left in the vehicle. Paso Robles experienced a record breaking 99 degree high temperature on Saturday. Paso Robles officers arrested Briant Reyes Estrada on Sunday morning.
Newsom wants California cities to ban homeless encampments

Gavin Newsom recently provided a template for an ordinance for cities and counties to adopt to help local officials put an end to the many homeless encampments that have proliferated throughout the state. Newsom directed the California Interagency Council on Homelessness to create guidance and a sample ordinance for local governments to follow in creating and implementing homeless camping rules.
Two people killed in three-vehicle crash in Creston

At 10 a.m., a caller reported the crash near the intersection of Highway 41, Creston Road and La Panza Road. Officers arrived to find a tan Chevrolet truck, a grey Ford minivan, and a grey SUV were involved in the crash. Officers temporarily closed Highway 41 to allow a medical helicopter to land.

On Monday, a fire broke out at the Valero refinery in Benicia. The fire occurred several weeks after Valero announced plans to shutter the refinery next year.

Shortly after 6 p.m., a caller reported the fire burning off Highway 58 near East Pozo Road. After several hours, Cal Fire crews stopped the forward progress of the blaze. Man arrested for stabbing woman to death in Santa Maria

Shortly before 11 a.m., a 911 caller reported a possible stabbing in the 1700 block of Rio Vista Lane. Officers arrived at the scene and found the male suspect, as well as the female victim, who was suffering from multiple injuries, according to the Santa Maria Police Department. Police arrested Eduardo De Guzman Torres, 63, without incident.
San Luis Obispo police officers honor Luca Benedetti

More than a dozen officers assembled outside the SLO Police Department shortly after sunrise. The officers then took a moment to honor their fallen colleague.
