Hello and welcome to the almost-weekend. My only plans include waiting for the slightly warmer weather to hit the east coast so that my Olympic ice rink of a driveway will stop being a death threat. Thank you to everyone who wrote in with their own ghost encounters after I shared the story of the straw-hatted phantom who plagued me while I was in San Miguel last week. There might be a part two to that story, because I’m speaking to a medium today, so we’ll see what happens.

It’s no secret that the current election is one of the most consequential of our time. Given the warp speed of the news cycle and fallout from the Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post pulling endorsements due to their respective owners’ financial interests, I thought it would be worth examining what authors and publishers must contend with after the election. I am pointing out the facts here, not telling anyone how to vote.

By now you may have seen a widely read Substack post that claims “no one buys books.” The piece also promotes the popular opinion that publishers do almost nothing for writers, going so far as to posit that most non-celebrity, non-franchise authors will receive little more from their publisher than “a tiny advance and a dozen readers.” (For what it’s worth, I know many traditionally published authors, and I don’t know a single one whose book has sold only twelve copies.

Instead, I want to point out some things about book publishing. When I set out to write this newsletter, my guidelines were simple: Do not complain about the industry, offer solutions, and provide valuable information to my readers.
