NEWPORT — The Newport Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BMA) authorized the city to manage and operate the farmers’ market at its most recent meeting on Tuesday. Opening day for the farmers’ market is slated for May 3 in the city hall parking lot. Executive Assistant Regina Thornton has been working on finding a solution to the farmers’ market situation.

The Newport Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted Tuesday to purchase some properties for the city. These additional properties will be used for a new police department, a new animal control facility and to expand a park. The board voted to purchase eight acres from the old Rhyne Lumber Company property off West Main Street. City Administrator James Finchum explained the property could be used to resolve both issues faced by the city now.

COCKE COUNTY — A public affairs specialist with the Office of Disaster Recovery and Resilience (OSAR), U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), visited Cocke County this week and she wanted to make the public aware that help is still available to those who suffered losses in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Arleace Green said she traveled from Johnson City through Unicoi County and into Del Rio before driving to Newport to the Newport Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting.

NEWPORT — The Kiwanis Club of Newport held its 41st annual pancake breakfast last Saturday at West End Baptist Church. The fundraiser is used for the club’s community service projects. Some of the club’s service projects include $10,000 of scholarships awarded to Cocke County High School and Cosby High School students, $5,000 per year for children’ s projects in the schools and donations to the community libraries and an additional $10,000 annually goes to community service projects.

NEWPORT — The 100th person to be exonerated from death row since the death penalty was reinstated, Ray Krone, told his story when he spoke at the Kiwanis Club of Newport. Krone said he spent 10 years in prison, three of them on death row, for a crime he did not commit. Born and raised in Dover Township, York County, Pennsylvania, he graduated from Dover Area High School in 1974 then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he spent six years on active duty. kAmp7E6C 9:D E:>6 :?
