Barclays is aiming to ramp up its capabilities in alternative investments, saying it has ‘gaps’ in this area for its private banking clients. In a presentation on Wednesday, private banking and wealth management CEO Sasha Wiggins said the bank needs to have a wider investment universe in alternatives. ‘This is an asset class which has been fast growing and where our clients are underweight relative to the industry,’ she said.

Barclays plans to hire 100 wealth managers in the UK over the next two years under plans to win over a bigger slice of the mass affluent market. Sasha Wiggins, CEO of Barclays Private Bank and Wealth Management, set out the hiring target on a webinar held for institutional investors and media. ‘There’s an opportunity for us here in the mass affluent segment. If we can capture even a fraction of these UK customers, we will scale our UK business considerably,’ she said.

It’s been a pretty impressive period for US small caps, with the Russell 2000 up nearly 29% over a year – not far behind a scintillating S&P 500. But unlike products in the US large-cap space, this is an area where going active has actually paid off: top funds in the space have outperformed by quite some margin. At the end of September, 62% of active US smaller companies funds had beaten indices over a three-year period, with outperformance rates notably up since 2021.
