EAU CLAIRE (WQOW) — Fire crews responded to a house fire near downtown Eau Claire. The fire broke out just after 7 p.m. Thursday at 558 Germania Street in a two-story multi-unit home. When the crews arrived, they discovered smoke coming from the back of the building and found a room inside on fire. All occupants had evacuated before the crews arrived, and no injuries have been reported. The cost of damages is not available at this time. Have a story idea? Let us know here

MADISON (WQOW) — Two students from South Middle School claimed the top spots in the State Civics Bee. Leila C. emerged as the champion during the statewide finals, held in Madison. She outperformed seven other finalists by answering various civics trivia questions and presenting an essay. The Civics Bee is modeled after traditional spelling and geography bees. Students also get to share ideas for improving their communities.

(WQOW) — Residents in several Western Wisconsin counties will soon notice low-flying planes as the state works to prevent the spread of the spongy moth. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection announced that small yellow planes will fly low over treetops through the end of June and into July. These planes will be seen in Barron, Buffalo, Dunn, Grant, Lafayette, Polk, and St. Croix counties. They'll be flying as early as sunrise on some mornings.

EAU CLAIRE (WQOW) — A University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire professor has pleaded no contest to a disorderly conduct charge. The charge stems from an incident where he flipped a table set up by the College Republicans on Election Day in April. Jose Felipe Alvergue, who was the chair of the English department, entered his plea in court on Wednesday. He has been ordered to pay a $295 fine.

EAU CLAIRE (WQOW) — Papa Murphy's on Brackett Avenue experienced a small fire Wednesday night. The Eau Claire Fire Rescue Facebook page said crews were dispatched to the fire after a passerby noticed it. Upon arrival, they found smoke filling the building and a small fire in the kitchen area, said the Facebook page. Firefighters successfully extinguished the fire and ventilated the building.
