    Rice Lake hosted a Juneteenth celebration on Thursday evening to commemorate the emancipation of slaves in the U.S. and to give celebrants the opportunity to forge connections with others of different races to further work toward freedom for all. Among the people celebrating Juneteenth in Rice Lake were two individuals who originated from opposite sides of the globe: a man from Eau Claire who worked in the Peace Corps in Togo, and a woman who hails from the West African nation herself.

    A New Auburn man accused of pointing a shotgun at a neighbor, his wife and Barron County Sheriff’s deputies, and ramming his pickup truck into an armored vehicle, will spend nine months in jail and four years on probation after sentencing on Tuesday. The Barron County Sheriff’s Department arrested Joseph T. Pusheck, 60, on Oct. 12 with help from the Barron/Rusk Emergency Response Team and Eau Claire Regional SWAT Team.

    Citizen Action of Wisconsin came to Rice Lake Monday, June 9, to urge people to band together and tell their stories in protest of proposed Congressional legislation cuts to Medicaid. Approximately 20 people attended the organization's Hands Off Medicaid rally at UW-Eau Claire – Barron County, sharing their stories of how Medicaid, which helps fund several programs in Wisconsin such as BadgerCare and Birth to 3, has kept them from losing health insurance and drowning in medical debt.

    Gerri Bara was one of approximately 400 protesters lining Main Street on Saturday in Rice Lake. Joining millions of others across Wisconsin and the nation in a No Kings protest, the Birchwood woman decried the president's flexing of U.S. military muscle on the event of the Army's 250th anniversary and his 79th birthday. "My dad fought in World War II and if I weren't out here today, I'd be letting him down," Bara said.
