Rice Lake's oldest civic organization, the Rice Lake Fortnightly Club, observed its 125th anniversary with a celebration May 6 at Turtleback. Most everyone attending wore a hat as a flashback to standard attire in the club's early years. The celebration luncheon included mystery photos, a look back at club highlights through a skit, and recognition of past presidents and longest members.

Retired art teacher Bruce Kaupanger's Spring Creek Clay Studio was the focus on a field trip on April 30 by art students of Rice Lake High School art teacher Kristin Korbel. "Advanced level ceramics students from Rice Lake High School had the unique opportunity to visit the studio and witness a Raku glaze firing," Korbel said. Those whose summer highlight is browsing through local farmers markets will be pleased to know that in addition to the Saturday morning farmers market that sets up in the parking lot at Cedar Mall, two new markets are starting this season on Sunday afternoons and Tuesday evenings. The new owners of Mommsen’s Produce Patch along Highway SS south of Rice Lake have not only renamed the business Midwest Harvest Hills, they are not waiting until fall to get started.

For many of the 46 residents forced to vacate Dove Healthcare - Rice Lake after a water pipe burst flooded the facility with ankle-deep water on Dec. 7, there's no place like home. A Rice Lake High School sophomore returned to the U.S. after a 10-week stay in Czechia with stories of attending school and proms, taking some ski lessons and seeing the sights of the Eastern European country with her host family. Heather Vintila, the daughter of Ted Vintila of Rice Lake, spent Jan. 18-March 28 on a youth exchange. She gave a presentation complete with photos to members of the Rice Lake International Friendship Association, also known as RLIFA, on April 10.

MIKANA - The swearing in of newly elected Town of Cedar Lake Clerk Suzie Bourmeester at the town's annual meeting on Tuesday, April 15, was set to be the last action by outgoing clerk Maryhelen Drew, who is leaving the post a half-month short of 50 years. The Rice Lake Board of Education, at its meeting Monday, heard a presentation on The Dangers of Online Gaming. Presenters were police school liaison Officers Stephanie Bohl and Andy Jondreau. The officers have a presentation that has been made available to district parents and at a resource event on April 12 at the Rice Lake Public Library, but they said few parents have seen it. Thus the resource officers are trying other ways to get the word out on signs of danger that parents should watch for.

At its meeting Monday, the Rice Lake Board of Education unanimously approved an agreement for use of county-owned buildings located at UW-Eau Claire — Barron County. The action sets into motion a timeline that includes 2-3 months to remodel, 4-6 weeks for state approval, start of relocating by September with occupancy next year. The two UWEC-BC buildings to be leased to the school district are the student center, to be remodeled into a childcare center, and the gymnasium.
