Emerging farmers in Limpopo have expressed concern over the increase in the fuel levy, which Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana recently announced in his third budget speech. The fuel levy for diesel and petrol has been adjusted to increase by 15 and 16 cents per litre, respectively. Some small-scale farmers say they are worried that paying more for fuel will increase their production costs.

Police are exhuming the remains of an estimated 40 people who were secretly buried in a pauper’s grave in the Mookgophong cemetery in Limpopo. The remains were buried in two separate graves without coffins, allegedly by a funeral parlour contracted by the provincial health department. Police and forensic officials from the Health Department are working together to exhume the remains of about 40 unclaimed bodies that were buried without proper procedures.

The investigating officer in the murder for insurance claims case, Keshi Mabunda has told the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court that his witnesses may be endangered if one of the accused is released on bail. Florah Shokane is applying for bail after being arrested with her mother, Rachel Kutumela and aunt, Anna Shokane in December in connection with killing nine people and claiming money from insurance schemes for their deaths.

The 48-year-old former police officer, who was accused of stabbing his stepdaughter to death near her school at Ga Thoka outside Polokwane in Limpopo, will make his second appearance in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Andrew Mehlape allegedly stabbed 14-year-old Rebotile Moloto multiple times two weeks ago. The accused faces three charges of murder, arson and intimidation.
