GRAFTON — Mike Riley of Cedarburg decided earlier this year to explore the Lakefield Cemetery, located just north of Lakefield Road on Port Washington Road in the town of Grafton. The small cemetery includes the final resting place of several hundred souls dating as far back as 1850 and as recently as the 1990s. What Riley found on his walk came as a surprise. "While looking at historical gravesites at the Lakefield Cemetery, I noticed a very large bur oak tree.
Stars and Stripes Honor Flight to make 76th flight next month

OZAUKEE COUNTY — What started as an idea of former Ozaukee County Supervisor Joe Dean to create an Honor Flight hub in Wisconsin has now spawned four other flights throughout the state. The Stars and Stripes Honor Flight was founded in Ozaukee County in 2008. Today, there are the Badger Honor Flight in Madison, Freedom Honor Flight in La Crosse, Never Forgotten Honor Flight in Wausau and Old Glory Honor Flight in Appleton.
Lions Club donation puts Food Alliance over the top

SAUKVILLE — A $5,000 donation from the Cedarburg Lions Club recently helped the Ozaukee Food Alliance successfully complete the $1.1 million capital campaign for its new, permanent location. "Our new home, which was the result of so many in our community coming together to help us meet the need in Ozaukee County, has been a complete game-changer for us and for those we serve," said Sara Pashak, the nonprofit’s president of the board.

Grafton Lions holding annual 9-Pin Tap event on May 11

GRAFTON — The Grafton Lions Club will hold its annual 9-Pin Tap event Saturday, May 11 at Harbor Hills Bowling Center. There will be two shifts at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.The cost is $30 per bowler, with teams of four to five. Cash prizes will be awarded for highest team score, highest scores for men and women and for a bowler who gets a 300 game. Bowlers who get five strikes in a row for women and six strikes in a row for men will receive free drinks. There will 50/50 raffles and gift basket raffles.

CEDARBURG — After seeing "The Sound of Music" as a fourth-grader in Texas, Beth Albright knew exactly where her life was going to take her. Albright taught her young friends the songs and moves of the film’s musical numbers every Friday during recess. CEDARBURG — The Cedarburg Lions Club, one of 48,000 Lions Clubs around the world, is celebrating a milestone this year. Chartered in 1947, the club has nearly 90 members who serve the community faithfully through service projects. The club hosts nine major fundraising events each year, including Cedarburg’s holiday and festival events, three major golf outings, the Ozaukee County Fair, the sale of poinsettias and more. "All funds raised go to charity," said member Dennis Corrigan.
