Marine police say a missing Sydney fisherman was not attacked by a shark but dragged into the water by it after he became entangled in fishing gear. A multi-agency air and sea search will continue on Tuesday for the man, identified by New South Wales Game Fishing Association as Paul Barning. Thelife member of the Port Hacking Game Fishing Club was taking part in a tournament about 55 kilometres off the coast of Port Stephens when it is believed he became caught in fishing line and fell overboard.

The family of Rhyanwen Horne, a young Sydney woman who went missing from a mental health clinic in Newcastle 50 years ago, is calling for a coronial inquest into her disappearance. The 24-year-old was admitted to the now-demolished Shortland Clinic in Newcastle on February 1, 1975. Later that evening, she walked out of the clinic. She had no transport and did not know anyone in the Newcastle region.

Alleged drug trafficker Hussein Chamas is in custody after being found on a yacht heading north in water off the Northern Territory coast. Mr Chamas was a wanted man, after fleeing a rehabilitation centre in New South Wales earlier this month. Mr Chamas is expected to be extradited to NSW. An alleged drug importer-turned-fugitive has been arrested on a yacht off the Northern Territory coast heading towards Indonesia, according to the Australian Federal Police.

Recent dredging work in the Swansea Channel in Lake Macquarie has inadvertently created the "perfect" habitat for the endangered little tern. Transport for NSW has fenced off an area on Elizabeth Island to protect more than 50 adult little terns nesting there. Wildlife volunteers will monitor the zone, reminding people to keep a safe distance from the easily disturbed species.
