A high school teacher will stand trial after pleading not guilty to grooming and sexually abusing a teenage boy near Newcastle. Karly Rae appeared in Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday where she pleaded not guilty to aggravated sexual intercourse with a child in October 2024. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 12 years in jail. A second count of the same charge was withdrawn. Court documents allege that she communicated with the 15-year-old on social media.

An appeals court has quashed the conviction of a former New South Wales juvenile corrections officer and ordered she face a retrial for allegedly abusing five boys in her care. In 2021, Nadia Khalil was sentenced to 12 years in jail with a non-parole period of more than seven years for sexually assaulting five boys at Reiby Juvenile Justice Centre near Campbelltown on the outskirts of Sydney.

Prominent Sydney plastic surgeon Richard Sackelariou has been sentenced to six years in jail, with a four-year non-parole period for engaging in child prostitution. The District Court has heard Sackelariou lured six girls into hotel rooms for sex, grooming them with large sums of money. In December last year, Sackelariou, aged 70, pleaded guilty to 10 charges involving girls in Sydney, Queensland and Newcastle in 2021 and 2022.

A former rehab facility director has been granted bail after pleading not guilty to perverting the course of justice by falsifying drug reports for accused criminals. Police arrested Ross Retini Pene, 68, at the Connect Global facility at Swan Bay in the NSW Hunter region on Wednesday. His arrest came after a year-long investigation into the facility by the State Crime Command's Raptor Squad North.

A former Aboriginal education officer at a Hunter Valley high school has been found not guilty of kidnapping two schoolgirls. Jayden Hudson Thorpe had been on trial in Newcastle District Court since May 21. The 32-year-old pleaded not guilty to two charges of taking and detaining a person with intent to obtain advantage, and not guilty to two counts of drug supply.
