People in New South Wales are being warned against eating wild mushrooms following the growth of death cap mushrooms in the state. NSW Health and local councils have detected the poisonous fungi spreading in Sydney, the Southern Highlands and southern NSW. It follows two years of surveillance by the health department and councils after an initial detection of the mushrooms in the state's south. Death cap mushrooms, also known as Amanita phalloides, can be fatal if consumed.

Former Australian of the Year Richard Scolyer has completed his 250th Parkrun — a milestone he set after he was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in 2023. The renowned melanoma researcher was among hundreds of runners who took part in the Greenway Parkrun at Haberfield in Sydney's inner west on Saturday morning. Professor Scolyer, who put himself forward as "patient zero" for revolutionary brain cancer treatment, crossed the finish line to applause and cheers from the crowd.

A man has been shot dead during a fight in a car park in the New South Wales Hunter region overnight. Emergency services found a man with a gunshot wound after they were called to Bar Beach car park in Newcastle about 11:40pm on Wednesday. Paramedics treated the man, but he died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified but police believe the man was aged 18. According to police, a group of people were fighting in the car park when the shooting occurred.

A man and a teenage boy have been charged over the accidental discharging of a firearm that killed a nine-year-old boy on a property in southern New South Wales. Emergency services were called to a property in Windellama, near Goulburn, about 11:20am on Sunday following reports of a shooting. Officers attached to the Hume Police District were told the nine-year-old had been injured after the accidental discharge of a firearm.

Anyone who has visited Sydney's CBD in the past 10 days has been told to monitor for symptoms of the potentially deadly Legionnaires' disease after six people were hospitalised. Legionnaires' disease is a severe form of pneumonia that typically develops once a strain of bacteria named Legionella pneumophila (Legionella) infects the lungs. This bacteria is not spread from person to person but through aerosols.
