A bench and plaque recognizing Merkel for his dedication to the bank and the community will be placed by Fleetwood Borough at the Fleetwood Reservoir in Ruscombmanor Township. At a ceremony June 3, Merkel was joined by family and Fleetwood Bank officials, as well as his dogs, Indy and Lizzy, who he walks on the trails of the land daily.

    A tractor-trailer crashed into a vehicle, seriously injuring three people and damaging a former auto shop in Perry Township Wednesday evening, according to emergency reports. The accident was reported about 5:50 p.m. at the former Corvette Corner building at the intersection of Route 61 southbound, also known as Pottsville Pike, and Zweizig Road. Corvette Corner is listed as permanently closed on Google.

    Taxes are increasing for residents of the Antietam School District. At a meeting Monday, the school board approved a $29.3 million 2025-26 budget that increases real estate taxes by 5.21%. The district's new tax rate is 51.3 mills, 2.54 mills more than last year's rate of 48.76. That means an increase of $254 for a property valued at $100,000, not factoring in exclusions and exemptions.
