A Berks County hazmat team was dispatched and residents were advised to shelter in place after an ammonia leak Thursday in Colebrookdale Township. The leak was reported shortly before 5:30 p.m. at Allentown Refrigerated Terminals, a temperature controlled storage facility. Crews noted a very strong odor at the scene. They said the facility was evacuated. Crews eventually requested a county hazmat team after noticing that ammonia appeared to be escaping the building and infiltrating a storm sewer.

Kyle Schies arrived at the Reading Hospital inches from death. A motorcycle accident in Tulpehocken Township in August left him with a traumatic brain injury and fractures in three of his limbs. On the Glasgow coma scale, which paramedics use to judge consciousness, Schies was rated the lowest possible score. “Me and a rock were the same,” Schies of Myerstown said of his state after the accident. “If you saw it (the crash), you’d think, ‘He’s probably dead.’ That was almost the case in my situation.

Brubacher Excavating Inc. has announced the acquisition of Abel Construction and Abel Recon, two construction companies based in Mountville, Lancaster County. Brubacher, a family-owned earthwork, underground utility and paving contractor based in Brecknock Township, Lancaster County, will finalize the agreement at the end of May, the company said in a press release.
