A bench and plaque recognizing Merkel for his dedication to the bank and the community will be placed by Fleetwood Borough at the Fleetwood Reservoir in Ruscombmanor Township. At a ceremony June 3, Merkel was joined by family and Fleetwood Bank officials, as well as his dogs, Indy and Lizzy, who he walks on the trails of the land daily.

    A tractor-trailer crashed into a vehicle, seriously injuring three people and damaging a former auto shop in Perry Township Wednesday evening, according to emergency reports. The accident was reported about 5:50 p.m. at the former Corvette Corner building at the intersection of Route 61 southbound, also known as Pottsville Pike, and Zweizig Road. Corvette Corner is listed as permanently closed on Google.

The highs of 99 and 100 degrees on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, each set marks, bettering the prior date records of 98 each day. Previous 98s for Monday were set in 1908 and equaled in 1923 and 1943. The Tuesday 98 was from 1943. The record for Wednesday is 99 from 1943. One low temperature was also a record.

    A Reading man faces home improvement fraud charges after police said he left a city property owner with an incomplete and faulty remodeling project. Yuki R. Turner, 29, of the 1200 block of Church Street was charged by Reading police on May 29 with the fraud count as well as theft by deception. He remained free to await a hearing following arraignment May 29 before District Judge Alvin B. Robinson.
